Cameron Voorhees

Bio



Master Sergeant Cameron R. Voorhees is a Guitarist with the United States Air Force Band of 
Flight's Concert Band, Night Flight, and Prism Brass, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. 

Sergeant Voorhees was born and raised in Leavenworth, KS, where he began studying guitar in 
the fourth grade. He graduated from Leavenworth Senior High School in 1976 and continued his 
studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Sergeant Voorhees graduated in 1981 with a 
Bachelor of Arts degree in Composition. 

Sergeant Voorhees enlisted in the United States Air Force in August of 1992 and completed tours 
with Air Force Bands at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts, and Hickam Air Force Base, 
Hawaii. He began his current assignment with the USAF Band of Flight in August 2004. In 
addition to his performance duties, he serves as Unit Security Manager and Operations 
Representative. 

Sergeant Voorhees's military awards and decorations include the Air Force Commendation 
medal, the Air Force Achievement medal, the Air Force Good Conduct medal, the Air Force 
Organizational Excellence Award, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on 
Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Humanitarian 
Service Medal, and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. Sergeant Voorhees has graduated from 
Airman Leadership School and NCO Academy. 

In his spare time, Sergeant Voorhees is active in his local church and enjoys spending time with 
his family, studying the Bible and playing jazz in the local community.

EXPERIENCE


Valuable music-industry, performance, leadership, and administrative experiences/skills gained from 20 years military service in the Air Force Bands career field, serving with world-class, professional musicians. 

Guitarist-

Acquired a well-honed guitar skill-set, mastering the guitar’s stylistic role in a variety of ensemble settings and music genres. 

Performed in concert bands, big bands, rock-and-roll groups, pop, country, folk, ethnic, Hawaiian, reggae, classical, and Latin. Doubled on ukulele, bass guitar, banjo and keyboards. 

Led small group jazz guitar trios and quartets.

Performed for live audiences ranging from an 80,000 city-wide event to entertaining small groups of community leaders in the General’s house living room. Performed with jazz greats Bobby Shew, Eddie Daniels, and entertainer Don Ho. Opening act for Charlie Daniels Band.

Performed solo-guitar in a variety of protocol settings, with distinguished military and community leaders in attendance.

Performed keyboards on big band tours, rock band, and concert band special number performances. Solo-piano for dozens of protocol events.

Deployed around the world to Asia and South America, performing for troops abroad and host-country leaders. A member of the AF band “New Harmony”, in support of “Operation Continuing Promise 2010”, a four-month US government sponsored, multi-national humanitarian outreach to South American countries. Arranging, Composition-

Air Force band arranger and composer for rock band and jazz ensembles. Produced over 370 detailed and accurate transcribed scores by ear, from CD recordings for various instrumentation, using “Finale” music engraving software.

Original composition-

Original jazz-fusion composition “Pursuit”-  commissioned to honor the “15th Pursuit Squadron” and their first response to the attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec 7th, 1941.  Performed on Air Force band CD “Wings of Freedom”.

Original arrangements-
 
Original Latin-style arrangement of “Deck the Halls” - performed on AF band “Holiday Greetings” CD.

Nutcracker Suite’s “March of the Wooden Soldiers” - Latin-style adaptation for 13-horn jazz band; 

Nutcracker Suite’s “Overture”- eight-piece jazz ensemble swing version; 
All performed on high-visibility holiday concert programs.

Hawaiian-style version of “Take the A-Train” for guitar and ukulele  - recorded on “Talk Story” CD.

Produced custom arranged Motown and Disco medleys, used in entertainment shows.

Leadership

Group leader, musical director, and arranger for AF band jazz combo “Nighthawk”, a four-horn group with vocalist and rhythm section. Received kudos from Band Commander as “…best small group in the Band of Flight.”

The group performed tours in four states, for various venues and audiences. Events included AF public relations concerts, jazz festivals, a music educators conference, and college and high school master classes.

Performances received standing ovations as the band demonstrated musical excellence from a cross-section of styles within the jazz genre- including Dixieland, be-bop, big band swing, neo-swing, modern jazz, Latin, and blues. 

As band leader, communicated to audiences AF public relations messages articulating the role of the AF bands, honoring our nation’s veterans, and fostering patriotism.

Conducted master classes expounding on music theory, chord scale use for improvising, practice regimen tips, and led question and answer segments.

Instructor

Implemented a standard AF training plan for younger musicians to attain skill-level accreditation, as set forth by career field requirements. By following a lesson plan, regular lessons were conducted and documented. Line-item accomplishments were certified and marked-off, as criteria were met. Students were prepared for a validation recital within a prescribed timeline.

Provided individual guitar instruction (military and private sector) covering various subjects- new beginner technique; soloing in blues, jazz, and rock styles; scales and modes, music theory, chord voicing, and chord solos.

Volunteer music director at local churches.  Arranged music selections, conducted rehearsals, assisted amateur-level musicians in learning parts.
